Based on the positive response from our Educational Forums in May, the College is pleased to offer two new Educational Forums for members, which will take place in October in Sudbury and Kitchener, Ontario. This initiative is in response to members who want to stay connected to the College but are unable to attend the Annual Meeting and Education Day (AMED) in Toronto. This year, we will be hosting forums in Sudbury, Ontario on October 18, 2011 and Kitchener, Ontario on October 25, 2011. If you live in Kitchener, Sudbury, or the surrounding areas, we hope you will join us for an afternoon to learn, connect and converse with your professional peers. The forums will commence at 12:00 noon with a buffet lunch, which will be followed by a College update and keynote address, ending at 4:00 p.m. The forums are free for members and are a benefit of membership in the College. This year’s keynote speaker is Marilyn Herie, PhD, RSW, Director, Collaborative Program in Addiction Studies at the University of Toronto. Dr. Herie’s presentation is entitled Community 2.0: A Guided Tour through the Digital Metropolis. Dr. Herie will present the highlights (and lowlights) of social media and the digital world, including the ways these tools are being used to foster social justice, social connectedness, and social support. A special guest, Stephanie Sliekers, will share her account of how she used social media in her recovery and healing from cancer. You will leave this session with tools and ideas for continuing your explorations of – and citizenship in – the “digital metropolis”. As Keynote Speakers at this year’s AMED, Dr. Herie and Ms. Sliekers’ presentation was extremely well received. As a result, the College would like to offer this presentation to our members in areas outside of Toronto. To ensure your attendance, we encourage you to register as soon as possible. In order to register, or for more information, please visit http://www.ocswssw.org/Educational_Forums.htm If you have any questions regarding this event, please contact Yvonne Armstrong, Communications Manager, at 416-972-9882 or 1-877-828-9380 ext.220 or email yarmstrong@ocswssw.org.
