Educational Forum

Date: Thursday, October 22, 2020

Time: 9 a.m. to 10:45 a.m.

Keynote Address: Beyond Positive Intentions: Providing Equitable Services for LGBTQ+ Newcomers

Speakers: Khadijah Kanji, RSW and Serena Nudel, RSW

Description: This keynote address is based on Access Alliance’s Community-based research project Among Friends: Overcoming Systemic Discrimination and Building Positive Spaces for Lesbian, Bisexual and Trans (LGBTQ+) Newcomer Women, which investigated the experiences and needs of LGBTQ+ newcomers, with a focus on those who came to Canada through the refugee stream. In addition to project findings, this presentation will describe the broader socio-economic/historical/legal context within which LGBTQ+ newcomers/refugees arrive to, and settle in, Canada. Khadijah and Serena will share Access Alliance’s evidence-informed model of service delivery, and how they have applied the findings of their research to create safer spaces for LGBTQ+ newcomer communities.

Please note that pre-registration ahead of the 2020 Educational Forums is not required. To access these events via livestream, simply visit the College website on October 22. The Educational Forum will be presented in English.
