The Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers would like to remind you to participate in its upcoming virtual Educational Forum on Thursday, October 22, 2020!
The Educational Forums are part of the College’s Glenda McDonald Educational Series. This half-day event is an excellent opportunity for members to stay connected with the College and gain valuable knowledge through the following agenda:
9 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. – OCSWSSW update
9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. – Keynote address
10:30 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. – Keynote Q&A period
Keynote address
The Educational Forum on October 22 will include a keynote presentation by Khadijah Kanji, RSW and Serena Nudel, RSW, entitled “Beyond Positive Intentions: Providing Equitable Services for LGBTQ+ Newcomers.” Members can now access the keynote address PowerPoint presentation here.
This keynote address is based on Access Alliance’s community-based research project, “Among Friends: Overcoming Systemic Discrimination and Building Positive Spaces for Lesbian, Bisexual and Trans (LGBTQ+) Newcomer Women,” which investigated the experiences and needs of LGBTQ+ newcomers, with a focus on those who came to Canada through the refugee stream. In addition to project findings, this presentation will describe the broader socio-economic/historical/legal context within which LGBTQ+ newcomers/refugees arrive to, and settle in, Canada. Khadijah and Serena will share Access Alliance’s evidence-informed model of service delivery, and how they have applied the findings of their research to create safer spaces for LGBTQ+ newcomer communities.
