At Chigamik Community Health Centre, located in Midland Ontario, the focus is on fostering a community-centered model of care that breaks down barriers and embraces culturally safe, inclusive approaches. Glen Chenard, the Clinical and Allied Health Services Director, speaks passionately about how Chigamik works to meet the unique needs of individuals by prioritizing collaboration and holistic health. Chigamik serves the large population of First Nations, Francophone and Métis communities in the region.
“We really strive to provide wrap-around care that isn’t burdened by the clock or limited to a one-size-fits-all model,” Chenard shares. “Our approach is about adapting to our clients and offering care that respects and integrates their cultural and individual needs.” With a multi-disciplinary team on hand and solid community partnerships, Chigamik brings together diverse perspectives and areas of expertise to address and support the health of the Georgian Bay communities.
For Chigamik, supporting First Nations, Francophone, Métis and other underserved communities means creating a space where clients feel seen, heard and understood. “Decolonizing healthcare is at the heart of what we do,” says Chenard. “We know the importance of building relationships is based on trust and understanding, especially with First Nations, Inuit and Métis clients.” As noted in a Perspective feature profile, Chigamik’s team draws on Indigenous healing practices to provide culturally safe care when needed.
Chenard also emphasizes the importance of collaboration, not only within their team but also with organizations and partners within the community. “We’re constantly asking ourselves, ‘If not us, who?’ when it comes to meeting community needs,” he says. “We know we can’t do it all, but we can find solutions by partnering with those who can fill the gaps.”
Through these partnerships, Chigamik creates accessible, responsive healthcare options tailored to each client. “At the end of the day, it’s about impact. When we work together, the community as a whole benefits,” Chenard explains. In delivering compassionate and culturally adaptive care, Chigamik exemplifies what it truly means to put the community first.
