Joint Resolution for the Responsible Disclosure of Information in Intimate Partner Violence Situations
The IPC recently released new guidelines to support professionals, including social workers and social service workers, in better understanding Ontario’s privacy laws when sharing personal information involving intimate partner violence (IPV). The resource, Sharing Information in Situations Involving Intimate Partner Violence: Guidance for Professionals was developed in collaboration with several engagement groups, including College staff.
These guidelines are aligned with the new joint resolution issued by the federal, provincial and territorial (FPT) information and privacy commissioners and ombuds to guide the responsible disclosure of personal information in situations involving IPV.
The joint FPT resolution calls for governments and organizations to develop privacy-compliant governance frameworks for responsible information-sharing in cases involving risk of serious harm to life, health or safety.
