Revisions to the College’s Medical Assistance in Dying (MAiD) Practice Resource

The College has recently updated its Medical Assistance in Dying (MAiD) practice resource – Medical Assistance in Dying: What Are My Professional Obligations?. This resource guides College registrants in understanding their professional obligations regarding MAiD.

The revisions were made in response to a report developed by the MAiD Death Review Committee (MDRC), which was established by the Office of the Chief Coroner. The MDRC was created in response to the increasing health, social and intersectional complexities identified through the MAiD oversight and review process. The MDRC provides multi-disciplinary expert reviews of MAiD deaths to assist in evaluating potential public safety concerns and providing insights to inform system improvements for MAiD. They have developed a report on Navigating Vulnerability in Non-Reasonably Foreseeable Natural Deaths that registrants are encouraged to review.

Following the MDRC review, several recommendations were made, and the College was asked to disseminate information to registrants who are involved in the provision of MAiD and encourage them to consider conducting social needs assessments and utilizing the MDRC review to inform their practice. These recommendations are now included in the updated MAiD practice resource.

For all practice inquiries related to MAiD, contact the Professional Practice Department at practice@ocswssw.org.
