In his 1967 speech to Philadelphia high school students, the civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. said: “If you can’t fly, run. If you can’t run, walk. If you can’t walk, crawl, but by all means, keep moving.” Since March 2020, we have encountered many changes and obstacles.

Hope on the Horizon
On January 20, 2021, I had the opportunity to catch moments of the United States presidential inauguration ceremony. I listened intently to poet Amanda Gorman’s stirring recitation of her poem “The Hill We Climb,” in which the youth poet laureate spoke about hope and unity. Months later, Gorman’s poem continues to resonate with me as it does with millions of others.

Whenever the seasons change, I feel inspired to make changes in my life – some small and contained, others more far-reaching. Change isn’t always a good thing, in and of itself. But change keeps us going. It’s often important, if not essential. As the leaves change colour, fall to the ground and return to the earth, I find myself reflecting upon the momentous changes that we have all witnessed over this past year.
