Social Work Programs Offered in Canada and Approved by Council as Equivalent to a Social Work Program Accredited by the Canadian Association for Social Work Education (“CASWE”)1
The following are the social work programs offered in Canada which Council has approved, by policy, as equivalent to a social work program accredited by the CASWE:
- A social work program offered at a university in Canada that, at the time the applicant obtained the degree in social work, was accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (U.S.A.) (“CSWE”) as a master’s level social work degree program;
- During the unaccredited period (the period between the lapsing of accreditation status by CSWE and the acquisition of accreditation status by CASWE), a social work program offered at a university in Canada that was first accredited by the CSWE as a master’s level social work degree program and subsequently accredited by the CASWE as a master’s level social work degree program; and
- A social work program offered in Canada which was, at the time of the person’s graduation, a candidate for accreditation by the CASWE and the program’s candidacy was successful as demonstrated by its being granted accreditation by CASWE and applies only to a social work program offered in Canada listed in the CASWE Directory of Accredited Programs.
Social Work Programs Offered Outside Canada and Approved by Council as Equivalent to a Social Work Program Accredited by the Canadian Association for Social Work Education (“CASWE”)1
The following are the social work programs offered outside Canada which Council has approved, by policy, as equivalent to a social work program accredited by the CASWE:
- A social work program offered at a college or university in the United States and accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (U.S.A.) (“CSWE”) as a baccalaureate or master’s level social work degree program;
- A social work program or equivalent program offered outside Canada and the United States which the applicant has submitted to the Canadian Association of Social Workers for evaluation and which the Canadian Association of Social Workers has evaluated as being equivalent to at least the Bachelor of Social Work obtained from a social work program accredited by the CASWE; and
- A social work program offered at a college or university in the United States, prior to January 1, 1975 and approved by CSWE as a baccalaureate level social work program during the years 1971 – 1974, inclusive, and subsequently accredited by CSWE as a baccalaureate level social work program.
In addition to the above social work programs, graduates who have obtained the following social work academic credentials will generally meet the education requirement for registration as a social worker with the College:
- A degree in social work from a social work program offered in Canada and accredited by the Canadian Association for Social Work Education (CASWE), or the National Indigenous Accreditation Board (NIAB);
or - A degree from a social work program or equivalent program offered at a college or university in the United States and accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE);
or - An evaluation by the Canadian Association of Social Workers (CASW) of your social work program which was completed in a country other than Canada or the United States, and wherein the CASW evaluated the program as equivalent to at least a Canadian BSW.
